Financial District

The southernmost tip of Manhattan Island, beginning at Battery Park and moving northward to Chambers Street, is New York's financial center and historic hub. As little as fifteen years ago, this almost exclusively commercial area was nearly deserted after 6:00 pm during the work week. Today, residential development has lead to a vast number of full-time residents who enjoy not only a speedy commute to work, but also the thousands of new shops, services and eateries that have sprung up as a result of the increased population. The development of the South Street Seaport and World Financial Center complexes in the early 1980s, have made this area one of Manhattan's major tourist destinations.
